India's Enron - Lessons Learned from the West ![]() Reuters Accounting scandal at Satyam could be India's Enron By Sumeet Chatterjee Wed Jan 7, 2009 10:32am EST BANGALORE (Reuters) - The head of Indian outsourcing firm Satyam Computer Services resigned on Wednesday, disclosing that profits had been falsely inflated for years and sending its shares tumbling nearly 80 percent. India's biggest corporate scandal in memory threatens future foreign investment flows into Asia's third-largest economy and casts a cloud over growth in its once-booming outsourcing sector. The news sent Indian equity markets into a tailspin, with Bombay's main benchmark index tumbling 7.3 percent in a firmer session for world markets and the Indian rupee fell. Ramalinga Raju, founder and chairman of India's fourth-largest software services exporter, said in a statement that Satyam's profits had been massively inflated over recent years but no other board member was aware of the financial irregularities. Yuan-settlement test to start
Source: Xinhua | 2009-1-7 | CHINA'S central bank said yesterday that it plans to implement a pilot program that would settle overseas trade with the Chinese currency instead of the US dollar. The People's Bank of China will expand financial cooperation with overseas economies and "properly deal with the global financial crisis," the central bank said. "We'll actively join international efforts to tackle the global financial crisis while safeguarding national interests," the central bank said. It pledged to implement a pilot program that the State Council announced last month. China will allow the yuan to be used for settlement between Guangdong Province and the Yangtze River Delta, China's two economic powerhouses, and the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau, according to the central bank..... full story: http://www.shanghaidaily.com/sp/art...icle_387229.htm ...der yuan ist wohl nicht mehr an den $ gekoppelt :confused:rolleyes sonst wäre es ja Wind um die Ecke treten :o |

Is reading SMW several times a day "Economic Masochism"? ![]() I usually make a quick swing through a couple of news sites first thing in the morning, before I get to SMW. Yesterday, at the top of MSNBC's page was a question. "Is this market rally for real this time"?, or something like that. The answer at 4:00pm, nope. I crack up every time I watch the cheerleaders on CNBC, calling the bottom. in the face of horrible news. One moran, last month, even stated that the recession was now over. And I think that was before they even officially admitted that we were in one. Goddamned librul media. I'll head over to the dog park in a few minutes, and get some real economic advice from a couple of the Fudd's buddies. A lab and golden retriever tandem named Katie and Mac. Prognosticators Relying on whether the dogs are rolling or romping is probably as good as anything. Or like the two fishing buddies who got up early every morning, rowed out to their favorite spot on the lake, and didn't catch a whole lot. Then one day they see this woman row out in a spiffy little boat, throw her line over the side and in no time she's got a couple nice fat fish. She rows back to shore and disappears into her cabin. Next morning same thing happens. Next day, again. This goes on for a few days. She's not out for more than five, ten minutes and she's got the day's catch. Then she doesn't show up one morning and the two buddies are wondering what happened, so when she does return they decide to row over to her and ask what her secret is. She shrugs and says, "It's real simple. Before I go out, I lift up the blankets and look at my husband. If it's layin' over on the right side, I fish off the right side of the boat. If it's flopped over to the left, I drop my line off the left. Works every time." The two buddies are flabbergasted, but one is a little quicker than the other. "And what if it's standin' straight up?" "Then I don't go fishin'." |

Madoff Should Watch Out For Russian Mob, Samurai Chicks Posted by alyx under breaking news [2] Comments ![]() If you listen to Doug Kass (or Larry Kudlow), you may have heard that it’s possible the Russian mafia was heavily invested with Bernie Madoff: The Russian mafia and Russian oligarchs are found to be large investors with Madoff. During the next few weeks, a well-known CNBC investigative reporter documents that the Russian oligarchs, certain members of the Russian mafia and several Colombian drug cartel families have invested and laundered more than $2 billion in Madoff’s strategy through offshore master feeders and through several fund of funds…That’s speculation - but if true, it’s certainly enough to make Madoff reluctant to leave the house. Now, Lauren sends me this story from Bloomberg, that reveals Uma Thurman’s fiance, Arpad Busson, lost quite a bit of cash to Madoff as well (we were LOL at the headline, “Uma Thurman No Help to Arpad Busson in Madoff Fraud’s Nightmare“): In mid-December, EIM [managed by Arpad Busson] disclosed it was one of at least a dozen funds of funds caught up in the massive alleged fraud perpetrated by New York investment manager Bernard Madoff. Busson says $230 million of client funds were invested with Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC, 2 percent of EIM’s assets. Madoff may have lost as much as $50 billion in what prosecutors say he himself described as a “giant Ponzi scheme,” in which he paid redemptions by existing investors with new investments.Bloomberg appears to care way too much that Busson is some kind of aristocratic socialite, and we will only become more interested in the Madoff-EIM connection if Busson asks his fiancee to get decked out in a yellow catsuit and go after Madoff, as shown above. |

No One Has A Job Anywhere Posted by Jason under bartertown , fail [6] Comments ![]() Sure, you could look at the latest unemployment numbers and be depressed: 7.2% unemployment rate, the highest in fifteen years, and an additional 524,000 jobless claims for the month of December alone, and say to yourself, “Self, this sucks.” But you could ALSO look at it another way, that 92.8% of Americans are not drawing unemployment, and that doesn’t sound too bad at all. Of course, for every silver lining, some joker out there’s got to find a cloud: “Even with a stimulus package, the unemployment rate is going to keep rising and by December it is likely to be over 9 percent,” said David A. Levy, chairman of the Jerome Levy Forecasting Center. In a speech on the economy, Mr. Obama said Thursday that the unemployment rate “could reach double digits.”So if you have a job right now, take a good look around the place, because you won’t have it by this time next year. We will all descend upon the sleepy town of South Park mindlessly begging for change. Comment:

Banken: Und nochmals 40 Milliarden weniger
It was the signature program of the New Deal -- and the most attacked and reviled by conservatives. In its eight years, from 1935 to 1943, it spent $10.5 billion employing eight and a half million Americans who previously had been jobless, rescuing them -- and the country -- from the straits of the Depression. Unemployment had been 24.9 percent when Roosevelt took office two years earlier, in 1933. Millions were homeless and wandering the country in search of jobs. Shantytowns sat on the edges -- and often in the midst — of every city. Many people had no clothes to wear or food to eat. The New Deal’s first relief and jobs programs were aimed at relieving suffering. But as Roosevelt and Harry Hopkins, who headed the W.P.A., looked around the country, they saw an infrastructure mired in the 19th century: unpaved roads, rickety bridges, inadequate water and sewage treatment systems or none at all, national parks and forests damaged by deforestation and erosion. Thus, W.P.A. job programs concentrated on these projects, as well as in building airports, hospitals and schools. Read More... |

Deutsche Bank’s Weinstein to Leave, Start Hedge Fund (Update3) :rolleyes
By Jacqueline Simmons and Aaron Kirchfeld Jan. 9 (Bloomberg) -- Deutsche Bank AG’s co-head of global credit trading, Boaz Weinstein, is leaving Europe’s largest investment bank to set up his own hedge fund following trading losses in his group at the end of last year. The departure comes as the Frankfurt-based bank winds down its proprietary credit trading operations. Weinstein, 35, plans to take about 15 colleagues to his new fund early in the second quarter, according to Michael Golden, a company spokesman in London. Colin Fan, who co-led global credit trading with Weinstein, will assume sole responsibility for the unit. Weinstein, who has been with Deutsche Bank for 11 years, posted about $1 billion of losses on trades involving bonds hedged with credit-default swaps after Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc.’s bankruptcy in September, two people with knowledge of the matter said Dec. 12. “Deutsche Bank wants to reduce risks in its business model and prop trading is a big part of this so it makes sense,” said Konrad Becker, a Munich-based analyst at Merck Finck & Co., who has a “hold” rating on the stock. “Right now, we’re reading more about hedge funds closing rather than opening.”....... full story: http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?...tIa0&refer=home |

Subject: do you know what a billion is?
The next time you hear a politician use the word 'billion' in a casual manner, think about whether you want the 'politicians' spending YOUR tax money. A billion is a difficult number to comprehend, one advertising agency did a good job of putting that figure into some perspective in one of it's releases. A. A billion seconds ago it was 1959. B. A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive. C. A billion hours ago our ancestors were living in the Stone Age. D. A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet. E. A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and 20 minutes, at the rate our government is spending it. While this thought is still fresh in our brain... let's take a look at New Orleans .... It's amazing what you can learn with some simple division. Louisiana Senator, Mary Landrieu (D) is presently asking Congress for 250 BILLION DOLLARS to rebuild New Orleans Interesting number... what does it mean? A. Well... if you are one of the 484,674 residents of New Orleans (every man, woman, and child) you each get $516,528. B. Or... if you have one of the 188,251 homes in New Orleans , your home gets $1,329,787. C. Or... if you are a family of four... your family gets $2,066,012. Washington, D. C HELLO! Are all your calculators broken?? Bush Prepares Request for Rest Of Bailout Funds
